About Club Matto
Our Club
Welcome to the Matraville RSL Club, where community, camaraderie, and history come together. Since eleven ex-servicemen first met at the Matraville Hotel in 1946, the Club has grown from humble beginnings into a welcoming hub for locals and members alike. Over the decades, it has become a place to gather, celebrate, and enjoy shared experiences from sport and recreation to social events, carrying forward a proud tradition of connection and community spirit.
Our History
Club Matto began with humble origins. On 6th June 1946, a meeting was held at the Matraville Hotel, attended by eleven ex-servicemen and an application was lodged with the State Branch of the RSL of Australia.
The original charter was issued on 26th June 1946, and as membership quickly grew, it became necessary to secure larger, permanent premises. An ex-army hut was purchased from Meadowbank, transported to Matraville, and became locally known as “The Tin Shed.”
The Tin Shed was remodelled and officially opened on 15th August 1957, with the first liquor licence issued on 6th September 1957. Recreational facilities followed: the Lands Department leased land for the bowling greens in 1959, and the car park and tennis courts in 1960.
Land was later granted to the RSL to build a permanent club building on the site of the current premises, which officially opened on 13th October 1962.
In 1971, the Sub-Branch separated from club management, and Club Matto became a limited company leased from the RSL Sub-Branch, as it remains today. Since then, the club has been remodelled twice, reopening in 1979 and again in 2001, continuing to serve the local community with pride.
